Objective : India is known for its diversity in religion and culture, which reflects in dietary habits. Indians usually take high carbohydrate and high fat meals. People with diabetes are expected to be more cautious about their diet versus their non-diabetic counterparts. We aim to compare the dietary macronutrient intake of people with diabetes and those without diabetes.

Methods :

Seven tertiary care centers treating primarily diabetes were selected from North, South, West and Central India. Each center randomly collected 24 hour dietary recall of people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) attending the clinic from April 2018 to July 2018. Similar procedure was followed for collecting data from people without diabetes. The data of two groups was compared and statistical analysis was done.

Results :

Of total 561 subjects, 339 were people with type 2 diabetes and 222 people without diabetes were selected. There was no statistically significant difference between the genders. Subjects in T2DM group were of significantly higher age (P< 0.0001), had higher generalized obesity (P<0.001).  Waist hip ratio was higher in non-diabetics, but was statistically insignificant (P=0.0661). There was no statistically significant difference in total calorie, carbohydrate or protein intake in two groups. The total fat intake was higher amongst T2DM group versus non-diabetic counterparts. There was significant difference in dietary fat intake practices in two groups. More people in Non-diabetic population were regularly rotating various oils and were using more than one type of oil as recommended, than T2DM population (P<0.0002)

Discussion : Indian population is known to have high carbohydrate, high fat diet but this studied population from four different zones has shown relatively balanced diet intake amongst people with T2DM.Moreover,though relatively younger population, nondiabetic group seem to have cautious fat intake.

Conclusion :

Generalized obesity was more prevalent in people with type 2 diabetes while central obesity was more amongst people without diabetes. People without diabetes are more cautious about use of oil and fat intake versus those of people with type 2 diabetes. Awareness about fat intake amongst T2DM population seems empirical.
