W. Timothy Garvey, MD

W. Timothy Garvey is the Butterworth Professor of Medicine in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, USA. Dr Garvey obtained his medical degree from Saint Louis University, completed residency training in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, and was a clinical fellow in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Dr Garvey has achieved international recognition for his research in the metabolic, molecular and genetic pathogenesis of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and obesity. The Garvey laboratory has made important observations regarding the pathogenesis of human insulin resistance and has furthered understanding of the role of the glucose transport system in human insulin resistance. A further interest concerns the understanding of obesity as a disease and advancing medical models to improve care of patients with obesity.
During his time as an American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) board member and Chair of the AACE Obesity Scientific Committee, Dr Garvey has been a leading contributor and author of numerous AACE initiatives. These include a position statement and proposition affirming obesity as a disease, the new medical diagnostic term for obesity, an obesity treatment algorithm, evidence-based obesity management guidelines and a cardiometabolic disease staging system. Dr Garvey was Chair of the AACE Obesity Consensus Conference held in Washington, DC, USA in 2014.
