AACE 2019 Plenary Speakers
Shlomo Melmed, MB (international equivalent of MD)
Dr. Melmed is the Helene A. and Philip E. Hixon Distinguished Chair in Investigative Medicine, Executive Vice President of Academic affairs, and Dean of the Medical Faculty at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is an international authority on pituitary disorders, having pioneered the discovery and application of novel treatments for endocrine tumors, and has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed articles.
Felicia Cosman, MD
Dr. Cosman is Medical Director of the Clinical Research Center at Helen Hayes Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons in New York. She is renowned in the bone research community, with her major focus over the last decade concentrated on the use of teriparatide – a bone-building medication in combination with antiresorptive agents, and in novel cyclic regimens, for treatment of severe osteoporosis.
Roy Taylor, MD
Dr. Taylor is Professor of Medicine and Metabolism at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom. He co-authored a landmark study that showed that a radical low-calorie diet can reverse type 2 diabetes. This is the third major study of a very low-calorie diet released by Dr. Roy Taylor’s team at the University of Newcastle. The research is part of a growing body of evidence showing that people with type 2 diabetes who successfully lose weight can reverse their condition because fat is removed from their pancreas, returning insulin production to normal.
George J. Kahaly, MD, PhD
Dr. Kahaly is Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology/Metabolism and Chief of the Endocrine Outpatient Clinic at the Gutenberg University Medical Center in Mainz, Germany.
Dr. Kahaly directs the Molecular Thyroid Research Laboratory and has authored more than 200 original papers and reviews, covering both clinical and experimental aspects of endocrine autoimmunity, immunogenetics of thyroid, and polyglandular autoimmunity, as well as cardiovascular involvement of metabolic disorders.
Kevan C. Herold, MD
Dr. Herold is Professor of Immunobiology and Medicine (Endocrinology) at Yale School of Medicine. The primary focus of his research is in translational immunology, understanding the basis for autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, and developing new therapies based on the understanding of disease mechanisms. Dr. Herold will discuss the impact of checkpoint inhibitor therapies on the endocrine systems.
