Objective : The Stanford Youth Diabetes Coaches (SYDCP) program is an innovative program that uses medical learners to train high school students to become diabetes coaches for their family members and friends with diabetes. We assessed student’s diabetes knowledge pre- and post-intervention and adult’s perceptions of this program.

Methods : High school students at an urban underserved high school and rural high school participated in SYDCP. Pre and Post diabetes knowledge survey of high school students were done. High school students coached adults with diabetes or prediabetes. Focus group of coached adults was conducted after program completion. R version 3.5.0 was used to analyze pre- and post-intervention surveys. Focus group transcriptions were analyzed using hermeneutic editing in Dedoose software.

Results : Diabetes knowledge and information accuracy improved after program participation in both the high schools (rural school improved from 53.7% to 79.8%; urban underserved school improved from 35.5% to 54.1%). Focus group analysis of coached adults with diabetes or prediabetes showed that participating in SYDCP increased discussions and awareness about healthy food and physical activity. Weekly action plans were repetitive but increased the social interactions between students and adults. Adults desired further clarifications of their roles in the program.

Discussion : n/a

Conclusion : Participation in SYDCP improved diabetes knowledge in high school with diverse student populations. Adults with diabetes and prediabetes coached by high school students perceived positive reinforcement of healthy diet and physical activity. School based health education programs benefitting adults with chronic diseases are a promising approach to improve health of the community.

I am a Final year Post-doctoral fellow in Endocrinology. Before joining the Endocrinology Fellowship, I have worked as an Internist for 6 years, initially in Mason City, Iowa and then at University of Missouri, Columbia. While practicing medicine I saw how diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis is affecting the health of the people and also realized that if we can educate and help change patient’s dietary habits it will lead to stark improvement in their health. This lead me to seek more training in Diabetes & other Endocrinological disorders. And I’m very confident that the experience I have gained during these past 18 months including doing peer based education in High School will help me achieve my goals in future.
