George Grunberger, MD, FACP, FACE

Grunberger Diabetes Institute

Dr. Grunberger is the chairman of Grunberger Diabetes Institute (GDI) in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He is Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and of Molecular Medicine & Genetics at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Professor of Internal Medicine at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Visiting Professor at First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic).
Dr. Grunberger has published over 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts in addition to review articles, abstracts and book chapters. His research interests cover the spectrum of subjects related to diabetes and its complications.
Dr. Grunberger has been an active member of professional organizations. He is Past President of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He is a co-editor of two international diabetes journals. Dr. Grunberger has served as an educator of medical students, residents, endocrinology fellows, master’s and Ph.D. candidates, and junior faculty over the past 35 years.

Bruce W. Bode, MD

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY


Bruce W. Bode, MD, FACE

Dr. Bruce Bode is a diabetes specialist with Atlanta Diabetes Associates in Atlanta, Georgia, and is currently on the faculty of Emory University, as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine. He is currently CEO and President of Atlanta Diabetes Associates that employs five endocrinologists, 10 Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants and 10 research coordinators. He received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals and a fellowship in diabetes with Paul C. Davidson, MD.

He has a strong affinity for working with children and young adults with diabetes and is considered one of the leading experts in the world on insulin delivery, glucose sensing, and the development of the Artificial Pancreas. He is very active in clinical research on new diabetes products including pharmacological agents to prevent diabetes and control glucose and new insulins and glucose sensors. He is a prolific writer with over 300 articles and books in the field of diabetes discussing current and future therapies for people with diabetes.

Richard M. Bergenstal, MD

Dr Bergenstal is an endocrinologist and Executive Director of the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet. In 2010 he was the ADA’s, President, Medicine & Science. In 2007, he was ADA’s Outstanding Physician Clinician.
He was Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago, where he received his MD and endocrinology training, before joining the IDC in 1983. He has served as a principal investigator for several NIH grants including, DCCT/EDIC (T1D), ACCORD & GRADE (T2D) and an NIDDK grant evaluating new advanced hybrid closed loop technology.
Most of his career has centered on the importance of patient-centered team care and glucose pattern recognition. Two areas of recent focus include, standardizing glucose data reports utilizing the Ambulatory Glucose Profile (AGP) and effective strategies for implementing CGM and hybrid closed loop therapy into clinical practice.
He teaches with the IDC team nationally and internationally on the importance of developing new models of care focused on achieving value in healthcare. He has been listed in Best Doctors in America since it began in 1992.

Irl Hirsch, MD

Dr. Hirsch received his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1984. He completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Miami, in Miami, Florida and Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Florida and a research fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Dr. Hirsch has authored more than 200 research papers. He also has written more than 60 editorials, three commentaries for The Journal of the American Medical Association, numerous book chapters and six books for patients and physicians.

From both a research and teaching point of view, Dr. Hirsch has spent his career studying best strategies for the use of insulin therapy and better technology in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. His ideas about glucose variability have led to the completion of the trial FLAT-SUGAR (FLuctuATion reduction with inSUlin Glp-1 Added togetheR). Additional past major clinical research trials include DCCT, ACCORD, STAR-1, the JDRF Sensor Trial, SEARCH, ORIGIN, and ADAG, a variety of important observations with the T1D Exchange and many more involved with insulin therapy. He has also been outspoken about insulin pricing in the US.

Dr. Hirsch is the former chair of the Professional Practice Committee for the American Diabetes Association and has served as editor-in-chief of two ADA journals, “Clinical Diabetes” and “DOC News”. He has served as a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Adam Brown is the head of diabetes technology & connected care at Close Concerns, bringing 17 years of personal experience with diabetes to all of his work. Adam has written extensively on CGMs, insulin pumps, automated insulin delivery, glucose meters, mobile apps, and wearables. He also serves as a senior editor and regular contributor at diaTribe.org, where his acclaimed column (Adam’s Corner) has brought diabetes tips to over 1 million people since 2013.
